Church music is a celebration of the creative powers God has given musicians to use. Though not everyone in our church is an exceptional musician, our human nature causes us to gather and sing of those things that are important in our Christian life. Our congregation is our largest choir, singing energetically and expressing themselves emotionally. The music we use in worship has worth both textually as well as musically. We do not sing the latest thing that is “hot” off the presses or popular on the airwaves but sing hymns that have stood and will stand the test of time. The hymns and music selected for worship has a focus which helps illuminate the theme of the day’s worship service. The ability of the congregation to process the hymns that are sung allows a large variety of hymns in our worship; from gospel hymns and stately hymns of our heritage, to multicultural and newly created hymns of the worldwide church. Our multiple choir programs present a variety of musical styles to meet the needs everyone in the church. These choirs sing music that is an offering to God on behalf of the congregation. The choral music is never meant to entertain but is for the purpose of God’s revelation to the singer as well as the listener. Not only does Oakland excel in congregational and choral music, the church is blessed with talented soloists, instrumentalists and handbell ringers. This wide ranging music program has a niche for anyone seeking to express their musical talent and encourages active participation in the many programs that are available. Music is a blessing given to us from God and we seek to make the best use of the talents as we offer our praise to the Creator.

Our Elementary Choirs are led by highly experienced and well-trained musicians who seek musical excellence from these choirs. The choirs rehearse weekly and perform several times during the year. Special programs include a children’s musical during the summer, a Christmas pageant during Advent and optional choir festivals. These choirs are divided into the Music Makers Choir (2nd & 3rd grade) and the Young Musicians Choir (4th & 5th grade). These two choirs rehearse for forty-five minutes on Wednesdays. Orff and Kodaly methods are used extensively with these choirs. |

Our Middle School and High School Youth Choir participates in the Festival by the Sea held annually in Myrtle Beach. We join over three hundred youth singers in rehearsal and worship throughout a weekend in March. Most of the music that is used during the year relates to this festival. This choir leads in worship numerous times during the year and is learning that choir membership is not only about performance but also about worship leadership. Additionally, the choir members learn to develop their voices for good singing during these years of maturation. The choir meets on Sundays in conjunction with our Youth activities. Rehearsals are forty-five minutes in length. |

The Chancel Choir focuses on the traditional and classical styles of music, singing most Sundays in worship. In most years major works are performed with orchestral accompaniment. The choir enjoys its fun times with annual pilgrimages to Charleston for the Festival by the Sea Adult Choir festival. Additionally, the choir meets for one day rehearsals in the fall and the spring to prepare the numerous anthems to be sung during the year. Annual parties and other get-togethers help this choir become a family that supports one another in good times and bad. These adults rehearse each Sunday evening for seventy-five minutes. |

This multiple age choir--youth and adult--specifically sings contemporary gospel music. The choir rehearses weekly for forty-five minutes and performs in worship several times each year. Geared to a more laid back style of singing, this group wears no robes and does not sing from the choir loft, rather celebrating the joy of singing without the weekly demands of leading in worship. |

Handbells are very active at Oakland. A fully graded handbell program is provided for Tintinnabulators. Handbell ringers begin learning to manipulate bells in the fourth grade and can ring through senior adulthood. Our Youth and Adults groups participate in state and regional festivals and ring regularly in worship. Our Adult groups enjoy traveling and have rung at many fun places such as the White House, in Riverside Church in New York, in the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, in England and in France. Additionally, our bells were heard for many years at the SC Governor’s Annual Treelighting Ceremony at the State House in Columbia. Currently our Adult bell choirs anchor the mass ringing at Rock Hill's Christmasville celebration in downtown Rock Hill. Beginning Bells is for fourth and fifth graders and meets for forty-five minutes in conjunction with our Wednesday evening program. Jubal Ringers is our middle and high school handbell group. This group plays regularly for worship. Our Carillon Ringers is an adult group that meets for ninety minutes on Tuesday morning and our Oakland Ringers is an adult group that meets sixty minutes on Sunday evenings. |

Oakland is fortunate to have a unique team to provide music for our worship services and to accompany several of our choirs. Barbara Beam and Melanie O’Neal are a mother/daughter team which has provided beautiful music for Oakland’s worship for over twenty-five years. Barbara and Melanie are both products of Winthrop University and bring musical excellence to our Moller Organ and Yamaha Concert Grand. |

Oakland’s Music Ministry is proud to be a Business Partner of the Rock Hill School District’s Elementary Honors Choir. The Music Ministry provides a home for this choir’s concerts and provides additional support through music and instruments.
Oakland is also the home of the York County Choral Society which rehearses in our choir room each week and frequently presents concerts in our sanctuary.
Additionally, our Music Ministry supports the Rock Hill Ecumenical Chorale through joint ventures with this choir. In the past our Chancel Choir has combined with the Ecumenical Chorale to present concerts for the community and has commissioned and performed a piece in honor of rock Hill’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. |
